WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO...
IAWP is a nonprofit educational organization representing professionals worldwide that work in public and private workforce development programs.
The organization was established in 1913 by a small group of public employment office managers who wanted to share ideas and experiences on how to more uniformly deliver employment services. The official name of the organization was the “American Association of Public Employment Offices”. With the affiliation of Canada in 1920, the name was changed to the International Association of Public Employment Services.” In 1952, the present name was adopted as the “International Association of Personnel in Employment Security” to include all workforce professionals in Employment and Training areas. The trade initials of IAWP are commonly used instead of the official title.
The Executive Office is located in Frankfort, KY, where the association provides a variety of communication, legislative, and educational services in support of its objectives which include enhancing an individual’s competence, supporting administrators in improving programs, and fostering closer working relationships with partners and among Employment Security programs internationally.
OHIO IAWP CHAPTER*
The Ohio chapter was chartered January 1, 1942. The Ohio chapter is rich in history. The state is an original member of the association and the first president, Fred C. Croxton (1913-14) was from Ohio. Besides Croxton, there have been four other international presidents from Ohio: W. F. Hennessy (the association’s second president) 1914-15; Ralph E. Gabele, 1951-52; Mary B. Keller, 1959-60; and Thomas Buescher 1996-97. Wilbur F. Maxwell was secretary-treasurer, 1918-19. The most famous secretary-treasurer in IAWP history was also from Ohio: B. C. Seiple who served for 27 years, from 1927 until 1954.
Ohioans have hosted six international conventions: Cleveland in 1918 and 1928, Cincinnati in 1931 and 1955, and Columbus in 1969 and 1997.
The Ohio chapter established the Elder R. Herring Memorial Foundation in the late 50’s to provide educational grants available to IAWP members with two or more years of consecutive membership. In 1980, the Ohio Chapter Hall of Fame was created in memory of Conner H. Sayers - a dedicated believer in IAWP.
Sub-chapters are involved in service projects benefiting: Salvation Army, Home for Battered Women, Canned Food Drives, Project Plus, Public Service TV and others.
